BMW VARC Mentor Program Launch
The VARC Mentor Program is an exciting new initiative designed to fill two needs in the Vancouver area sailing community. The first objective is to introduce neophyte or prospective racers to the art of racing competitively in an environment that is less competitive than the typical VARC regatta with aid from VARC Mentors. The second objective is to provide help for existing VARC competitors that want to raise their level of competitiveness with aid from VARC Mentors. As an added bonus, the Mentor Program provides an opportunity for experienced racers to give back to the local sailing community by sharing their knowledge and skills.
The VARC Mentor Program will use a small cadre of experienced VARC racers with on-the-water teaching skills who are willing to volunteer their time to accomplish the two stated objectives of the program. VARC Mentors will be supplied with personalized VARC/BMW logo sport shirts, VARC/BMW logo personalized windbreakers and recognition on the VARC website for their contribution to the sport.
Mentors will make themselves available through scheduling on the VARC website (new page for the Mentor Program coming soon!) for interested boat owners to contact them for local club racing either on weekday evenings in the summer period or local club racing on non-VARC event weekends.
The fastest way for prospective racers to learn the sport is from successful racers and the VARC Mentor Program provides a mechanism where the best practices of the successful racer can be disseminated through the sailing community.
VARC is seeking five foredeck crew, five trimmers and five drivers/tacticians to fill these fifteen Mentor slots. Please contact Peter Lagergren, VARC Chairman, if you are willing to be a Mentor.
